Frequently Asked Questions

What are the biggest computer issues people have here in Taos?

One of the most common computer issues, not just in Taos, is viruses! They are often disguised as virus removers so people tend to install several malware programs, thinking it will solve the problem but only making matters worse.

The other common problem we have around here is caused by lightning storms. A direct hit to equipment without surge protectors can wipe out a whole computer network and peripherals, we've seen it happen many times.

Where are you guys located?

We operate out of our home office in Ranchos de Taos. We do not currently have a retail location. We offer our computer repair service via free pick up and delivery or on-site service.

I have like 6 virus scanners! Why do I still get viruses?

If you have a well known, reputable virus scanner such as Norton or McAfee, just running it is not enough. New viruses come out daily and these scanners need regular updates. We cannot recommend either of the aforementioned anti virus programs, as they are resource intensive and generally ineffective.

Don't download unknown "free" antivirus programs. They are likely to be the worst types of viruses disguised as virus removers. Be careful what you click on! Don't download free software; cool software on the Internet is generally not free. You can usually Google the name of the program to find out if it is legitimate, but when in doubt, don't click the 'OK' button. You may surf carefully, but you still can get viruses, they are sneaky and can be hidden in Flash ads now!

If you get a virus please call us! We can fix them fast!

I heard Windows Vista was no good, what do you think?

Windows Vista had its problems getting started. It was released a year later than anticipated, and launched before hardware companies could write software drivers to make their products work with Vista.

But now Vista has fixed all initial issues and hardware makers have updated their drivers for optimal use in Vista.

There are a lot of nice new features, which do take some getting used to if you're a long time windows user. PCs no longer come with the option for good ol' XP, but Vista really is good once you get used to it.

Should I let my teenager use Myspace?

Children under 13 are not legally allowed to sign up for Internet accounts. Parenting on the Internet is still a new concept and should be addressed carefully. Though we are not parenting experts, we are Internet experts and there is certainly plenty of misinformation on the Internet that you should protect your young children from.

If you refuse to allow your child to use the online social networking services, they are likely to do it anyway behind your back. We recommend that you limit the amount of time they spend online, and require that you know what they put in their profile. Profiles should not contain their real name or photos and they should be set to private.

If you are concerned about what your children are doing online, you may consider secretly installing monitoring software. You would be able to watch exactly what they're doing on their computer from your computer, in real time.

Do you accept credit cards?

At this time we do not have a merchant account. We can accept credit card payments through Paypal up to $2000.00 from a non Paypal account holder. Cash or check is preferred.
